The Answer to my long-standing health issues? – Melanie, Galway

When did you first start to develop EHS/Microwave sickness, or make the link that your symptoms were caused by RF/EMFs?

I got my first mobile phone about 15 years ago now (at the time it would have been a very basic phone, Nokia perhaps). I quickly began to realize that putting it anywhere my ear was causing me to quickly develop a headache always on the same side and in the same location. I would also get dizzy or somewhat unwell. Sometimes the discomfort would last for hours, sometimes it would last for days. At the time, I didn’t think much of it. I simply avoided using a mobile phone unless I really had to (and then I would use loud speaker), and assumed I was the one that had a problem and there was nothing wrong with the phone. Shortly after getting this mobile phone, I also started living in a house with wifi. At the time I knew nothing about how it worked, and quickly became addicted to spending hours on end on the Internet. About 6 months to a year after that, I started developing chronic fatigue type symptoms, which started affecting my working life. I couldn’t face doing much, if anything, at work when I got there. I also started becoming sensitive to other people’s mobile phones as well. I would get a headache if a phone would ring near me.

I didn’t learn about the potential harm caused by wifi and mobile phones etc. until a few months ago, and I got rid of wifi in my house (I only use wired connections and have an Ethernet cable going to my laptop, with the wifi switched off at the router), and more or less of my phone too. I only switch it on every few days to check if anyone has texted me, and when I do, I make sure wifi, hotspot and Bluetooth are never switched on. I also switch off the wifi whenever possible in my various jobs, and avoid going to big cities or anywhere that would have public wifi or a lot of wireless connection and devices.

My boyfriend reported that I am a lot calmer, and my chronic fatigue type symptoms which were still plaguing me until a few months ago, causing me much reduced energy levels and more or less constant brain fog, have basically vanished. I cannot be certain they were caused by exposure to wireless radiation, but there does seem to be a strong correlation between the 2. To be honest, I has started to assume that low energy was just my lot in life and I’d never get better – now I realize what true energy and being more or less normal feel like again!!

I am also able to spend much longer on a computer, whereas before when using wifi I would quickly become restless and aggravated when on my laptop and would need to drastically reduce my computer time.

What are your symptoms?

None if I am at home in a low EMF environment. Elsewhere I am liable to developing headaches, dizziness, brain fog, and restlessness leading to insomnia.

How does it affect your life on a day-to-day basis – home, work, socially?

It drastically reduces my ability (and desire!) to travel on public transport, be in public places such as libraries, shopping centres. I fear that with 5G coming I will be more or more housebound, unless I want headaches, brain fog etc to become a way of life! I am extremely concerned and worried about this, as I much enjoy going to exhibitions, art shows and travelling, and the whole thing is extremely frustrating for me, especially when there are so many people with similar stories. When I open up about it at work, I often find people have similar stories – only yesterday somebody was telling me how she feels sort of hyper when the wifi is switched on in her house. Thankfully her husband has agreed to switch it off when he doesn’t use it.

What changes have you had to make in your life to reduce your exposure to RF/EMF radiation (eg, moving house, leaving work, shielding)?

As mentioned above, we got rid of wifi in the house, and both my boyfriend’s and my phone are switched off or on flight mode most of the time. He has had to drastically reduce the time he spends on his phone as he cannot use it when I’m around. I am experimenting with various shielding devices, so far with mixed results. I am very frustrated to have to spend money on these, when the problem wasn’t created by myself in the first place, and I am exposed without my own consent when I go out.

How do your family and friends respond to your situation?

My boyfriend is extremely supportive. Other friends don’t know or reacted with disbelief, looking at me like I’m half crazy. Whilst my boss in the health store where I work attended a meeting I organized in which I explained I was very sensitive to mobile phones, she still uses hers around me, and I’ve had to live with headaches when her phone starts ringing near me, which is extremely frustrating, and I’m not sure how to approach the topic with her. I am aware people get very defensive when you say anything about their beloved phone.

How does your doctor, health professional respond to your EHS?

I haven’t mentioned it to any of them, since I rarely visit a GP.

What do you think our government and decision makers should do?

There is so much they should be doing! Stop telling EHS sufferers that their symptoms are not linked to EMF, when it is quite clear that they are. For instance, I never get headaches unless I am near a phone, using one or someone is using one near me. Once I noticed I was becoming restless and somehow aggravated in front of my laptop again – only to realize that the wifi had switched itself back on during an update, something I didn’t know was possible.

It is my opinion that the Government should

  • Fund some research on EHS with the view to provide help and support and possible treatment options to sufferers
  • Fund some additional independent research on 5G and ask an INDEPENDENT body to review the existing literature on 2,3 and 4G
  • Halt the deployment of 5G until the above is done
  • Issue some official advice to the public advising of the potential risks linked to mobile phone usage, and advising of the safest ways to use one, if one must be used at all

How do you feel about the roll-out of further 4G, 5G, smart meters and LED street lighting in your area and across the country?

Pretty panicky. It is pretty unbelievable that it is going ahead at all, when there is so much scientific literature showing the harmful effects of existing generations of wireless telecommunications. As previously mentioned, I fear that if I want to retain my newly found health, I will be housebound, due to the dramatic increase in the number of transmitters needed for 5G to work.
