“The greatest polluting element in the earth’s environment is the proliferation of electromagnetic fields”
– Dr Robert O Becker, Electromagnetism and Life, The Body Electric. and Cross Currents. The Promise of Electromedicine, the Perils of Electropollution.
“If I asked you how much more radiation is penetrating your body today compared to ten years ago, is it twice as much, three times as much? No it’s a quintillion times more. That’s a one with eighteen zeros.”
– Professor Olle Johansson, Sweden
ES-Ireland is a voluntary group comprised mainly of people suffering the ill effects of RF/EMF as well as concerned parents and citizens. Originally named Irish Electromagnetic Radiation Victims Network (IERVN), it was set up in the late 1990s to highlight and compaign for the rights of people in Ireland experiencing adverse health effects from nearby mobile masts.

Wireless radiation and man-made electromagnetic radiation – radio-frequency electromagnetic fields (RF/EMF) cause harmful biological effects in humans and living things. We are being increasingly exposed to man-made microwave radiation – in our homes, schools, towns, cities, parks, hospitals, from mobile/smart phones, telecommunication masts & antennae (2G, 3G & 4G), wi-fi, wireless devices. As well as EMF radiation from powerlines and pylons. In addition, utility companies are replacing analogue electricity and gas meters with Smart Meters which transmit information using pulsed wireless radiation. Plans are also in place for 5th generation communications (5G) which experts warn will have even more dangerous consequences for health and the natural environment.
What about Safety Standards?
So-called safety standards do exist for radio frequency (RF/EMF) radiation emissions, but these standards are only based on thermal heating effects. These standards were set by ICNIRP (International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection) in 1998, but were voted “out of date” & “obsolete” by the European Parliament in 2008. They do not adhere to the Precautionary Principle and only apply to “thermal effects”, ie heating and shock, despite evidence showing that biological non-thermal effects do occur with exposure to radiation.
ICNIRP safety standards – adopted by many governments, including our own and which have not been updated since the significant rise in wireless technology – do not protect us from adverse biological effects which are thought to be the precursor to many serious diseases.
Paolo Vecchia, Chairman for ICNIRP (2004-2012) presented at the RRT conference in 2008. In his presentation, he made it very clear that: “the ICNIRP guidelines are neither mandatory prescriptions for safety, the “last word” on the issue nor are they defensive walls for Industry or others.”
This statement makes it clear that the decision to adopt these guidelines into national legislation as “sufficient to protect public health” is political. https://www.radiationresearch.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Eileen-OConnor-and_Susan_Foster.pdf
What do Scientists and Expert Groups think of ICNIRP Safety Standards?
There are already thousands of scientific studies and continuing research showing clear dangers of the damaging effects on our bodies to this radiation, well below ICNIRP guidelines. These studies show the link between RF/EMF exposure and health concerns, including headaches, tinnitus, joint and limb pain, heart palpitations, concentration and memory problems, inflammation, free-radical damage, DNA damage, neural damage, Alzheimer’s, cancers, increase in childhood cancers and brain tumours, and electromagnetic-hypersensitivity (EHS)/ microwave sickness.
The BioInitiatve Report informs us that exposure to wireless and electromagnetic radiation ‘can alter and damage genes, trigger epigenetic changes to gene expression and cause de novo mutations that prevent genetic recovery and healing mechanisms. These exposures may interfere with normal cardiac and brain function; alter circadian rhythms that regulate sleep, healing, and hormone balance; impair short-term memory, concentration, learning and behavior; provoke aberrant immune, allergic and inflammatory responses in tissues; alter brain metabolism; increase risks for reproductive failure (damage sperm and increase miscarriage risk); and cause cells to produce stress proteins’. The BioInitiative Report
The Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly issued recommendations in 2011 to all member states of the Council of Europe that they “reconsider the scientific basis for the present standards on exposure to electromagnetic fields set by the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection, which have serious limitations, and apply ALARA principles, covering both thermal effects and the athermic or biological effects of electromagnetic emissions or radiation”, as well as reducing children’s exposure to electromagnetic radiation, setting “preventive thresholds for levels of long-term exposure to microwaves, in accordance with the precautionary principle” and informing the public of the potential health risks. http://assembly.coe.int/nw/xml/XRef/Xref-XML2HTML-en.asp?fileid=17994&
International Doctors’ Appeal Freiburg – In 2002, more than 1,000 doctors signed the Freiburg Appeal calling on support and demanding precaution with regard to wireless radiation. 10 years later, in 2012, with rapidly increasing radiation being introduced in our society, they relaunched this Appeal, calling on physicians, scientists and governments around the world to heed the warnings. International Doctors’ Appeal Freiburg
International EMF Scientist Appeal – In May 2015 this Appeal was sent to the Secretary General of the United Nations, UN member states and the World Health Organization (WHO) requesting they adopt more protective exposure guidelines for electromagnetic fields (EMF) and wireless technology in the face of increasing evidence of risk, and to educate the public about health risks, particularly to children and pregnant women. To date 247 scientists from 41 nations have signed the Appeal International EMF Scientist Appeal
International Guidelines on Non-Ionising Radiation (IGNIR)- Established in 2017 , IGNIR is an independent organisation, providing scientific advice and guidance on the health and environmental effects of man-made non-ionising radiation. Its aim is to protect people and the environment from detrimental exposure and gives exposure limit recommendations for day, night and sensitive people. “Although at present there are no assured safe levels of man-made EM exposure, and studies continue to show harm to living systems at very small exposure values, this guidance aims to help achieve substantial reduction in EM exposure.” IGNIR Guidelines and IGNIR Website

The EMF Call 2018– Scientists and NGOs Call for Truly Protective Limits for Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields (100 kHz to 300 GHz) –
‘ICNIRP’s opinion and guidelines are unscientific and protect industry, not public health.
In order to protect the public and the environment from the known harmful effects from electromagnetic fields (EMF) we ask the United Nations, the World Health Organization and all governments not to accept the ICNIRP guidelines. They are not protective, rather they pose a serious risk to human health and the environment since they allow harmful exposure to the world population, including the most vulnerable, under the unscientific pretext that they are “protective”.’ https://www.emfcall.org/about/

UN Staff Member Claire Edwards – “There are no legal limits on exposure to EMR. Conveniently for the telecommunications industry, there are only non-legally enforceable guidelines such as those produced by the grandly named International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection, which turns out to be like the Wizard of Oz, just a tiny little NGO in Germany that appoints its own members, none of whom is a medical doctor or environmental expert.’ https://www.youtube.com/watch
