EVIDENCE FOR EFFECTS ON THE IMMUNE SYSTEM – PROF OLLE JOHANSSON

Professor Olle Johansson –  for the Bioiniative Working Group

https://bioinitiative.org/wp-content/uploads/pdfs/sec08_2007_Evidence_%20Effects_%20Immune_System.pdf

VIII. Conclusions

•  Both human and animal studies report large immunological changes with exposure to environmental levels of electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Some of these exposure levels are  equivalent to those of e.g. wireless technologies in daily life.

•  Measurable physiological changes (mast cells increases, for example) that are bedrock indicators of allergic response and inflammatory conditions are stimulated by EMF exposures.

•  Chronic exposure to such factors that increase allergic and inflammatory responses on a continuing basis may be harmful to health.

•  It is possible that chronic provocation by exposure to EMF can lead to immune dysfunction, chronic allergic responses, inflammatory responses and ill health if they occur on a continuing basis over time. This is an important area for future research.

•  Specific findings from studies on exposures to various types of modern equipment and/or EMFs report over-reaction of the immune system; morphological alterations of immune cells; profound increases in mast cells in the upper skin layers, increased degranulation of mast cells and larger size of mast cells in electrohypersensitive individuals; presence of biological markers for inflammation that are sensitive to EMF exposure at non-thermal levels; changes in lymphocyte viability;decreased count of NK cells; decreased count of T lymphocytes; negative effects on pregnancy (uteroplacental circulatory disturbances and placental dysfunction with possible risks to pregnancy); suppressed or impaired immune function; and inflammatory responses which can ultimately result in cellular, tissue and organ damage.

•  Electrical hypersensitivity is reported by individuals in the United States, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany. Denmark and many other countries of the world.Estimates range from 3% to perhaps 10% of populations, and appears to be a growing condition of ill-health leading to lost work and productivity.

•  The WHO and IEEE literature surveys do not include all of the relevant papers cited here, leading to the conclusion that evidence has been ignored in the current WHO ELF Health Criteria Monograph; and the proposed new IEEE C95.1 RF public exposure limits (April 2006).

•   The current international public safety limits for EMFs do not appear to be sufficiently protective of public health at all, based on the studies of immune function.New, biologically-based public standards are warranted that take into account low-intensity effects on immune function and health that are reported in the scientific.

ABSTRACT:

The electromagnetic radiation (EMR) emitted out of wireless communication modules in various electronic devices have been identified by researchers as biologically hazardous to humans as well as other living beings. Different countries have different regulations to limit the radiation density levels caused by these devices. The radiation absorbed by an individual depends on various factors such as the device they use, the proximity of use, the type of antenna, the relative orientation of the antenna on the device, and many more. Several standards exist which have tried to quantify the radiation levels and come up with safe limits of EMR absorption to prevent human harm. In this work, we determine the radiation concern levels in several scenarios using a handheld radiation meter by correlating the findings with several international standards, which are determined based on thorough scientific evidence. This study also analyzes the EMR from common devices used in day to day life such as smartphones, laptops, Wi-Fi routers, hot spots, wireless earphones, smartwatches, Bluetooth speakers and other wireless accessories using a handheld radio frequency radiation measurement device. The procedure followed in this paper is so presented that it can also be utilized by the general public as a tutorial to evaluate their own safety with respect to EMR exposure. We present a summary of the most prominent health hazards which have been known to occur due to EMR exposure. We also discuss some individual and collective human-centric protective and preventive measures that can be undertaken to reduce the risk of EMR absorption. This paper analyses radiation safety in pre-5G networks and uses the insight gained to raises valuable concerns regarding EMR safety in the upcoming 5G networks ….  READ FULL PAPER HERE

IX. CONCLUSIONS:

People should be made aware that the EMR from using day to day cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth devices are harmful to human health. The levels of radiation observed in most cases such as phone calls, internet browsing on laptops and smart phones, using wireless routers and hot spots, Bluetooth smartwatches and smartphones are unsafe when compared with radiations limits determined by medical bodies. According to current medical literature, various adverse health effects from exposure to RF EMR have been well documented. For now, wireless technologies must be avoided as much as possible. New and innovative wired solutions which provide the same level of user-friendliness should be encouraged.Intervention of government and medical bodies with the main purpose of protecting human health is of utmost necessity to ensure good economic development without compromising the health of the population. Countries must adopt the guide-lines suggested by medical bodies which take into account both thermal and non-thermal effects of EMR. At present, all individuals must take preventive and protective measures to protect themselves from harmful EMR exposure ….

March 2020 – DUTCH FOUNDATION TAKES GOVT TO COURT OVER 5G ROLLOUT, CITING HEALTH CONCERNS

The Stop5GNL Foundation has filed a suit summary proceedings against the Dutch government, to stop it from rolling out 5G. The foundation believes the deployment is unlawful because it does not protect citizens against the consequences of radiation exposure from 5G.
5G means an increase in transmission towers and small transmitters (narrow cells), especially in densely built-up areas. According to the foundation, 5G has not been adequately investigated for health risks. The group said that the studies performed for 2G, 3G and 4G have shown harmful effects for humans, animals and plants, and that the increase in radiation intensity for 5G will have a major impact on people and the environment.

Stop5GNL believes the outdated radiation guidelines offer no protection against these harmful effects.

Lawsuit against the Dutch State to stop 5G

We are of the opinion that the rollout of 5G is not justifiable because of the many serious indications for health risks. The rollout of 5G can impact our human rights severely. Currently, public authorities provide incorrect and even misleading information about the safety of EMF. Due to these risks we demand a moratorium on the rollout of 5G, similar to Brussels and several parts of Switzerland Read more HERE

GLOBAL 5G PROTEST – DUBLIN – JANUARY 2020

With thanks to Ireland for Safe Technology

On 25th January 2020, as part of a global 5G awareness day, 270 events took place in 38 countries worldwide. In Ireland, around 130 people gathered in St Stephen’s Green and walked to the Dail. Speakers at the event included Diarmaid Mulcahy, Tony Hughes, Michele Kennedy, Mike Putt and John Weigel. The event was covered by TG4 and also appeared on RTE “Nuacht”.

This short video is a very visual and informative summary of this ground breaking citizens march, and features some extracts from the speeches on the day as well as an educative clip from the Environmental Health Trust (ehtrust.org) explaining the effects of wireless devices on children.

5G (not to be confused with 5GHZ) is the latest generation of wireless networks and devices which will enable the “internet of things”, whereby some appliances in or near your home will be connected to control them. Examples include smart fridges, driverless cars and buses in “smart” cities and villages.

5G is forecast to increase electromagnetic radiation levels between 10 and 100’s of times the current 4G levels, which has given rise to strong concerns worldwide, with Brussels choosing to halt the technology, and many cities and counties in Ireland, Italy and UK, amongst other countries, issuing moratoriums asking for more research to be done before the new technology is deployed.

Electromagnetic radiation is a class 2B (possible carcinogen) since 2011, and many independent scientists such as Professor Olle Johansson and Lennart Hardell from Sweden believe it should be a 1A (definite carcinogen) due to the 7000-10000 mostly peer reviewed studies showing it can cause very harmful effects, from cardiac and reproductive issues, DNA damage possibly leading to cancer and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s, not to mention the detrimental effects on plants, insects and our environment.

USA – HISTORIC LEGAL ACTION AGAINST THE FCC ON CELL PHONE & WIRELESS HEALTH EFFECTS

EHT Takes Historic Legal Action Against the FCC

Appeal filed after the FCC refuses to update their 24 year old wireless radiation limits.

Washington, DC – A group of scientists, consumer health nonprofits, and citizens filed a historic legal action against the FCC for its refusal to update its 24-year-old cell phone and wireless radiofrequency (RF) radiation guidelines. The legal petition contends the FCC’s action is “arbitrary, capricious, an abuse of discretion” and “not in accordance with the law” as the FCC has violated the Administrative Procedure Act and the National Environmental Policy Act by failing to adequately review the hundreds of relevant scientific submissions finding harmful effects from wireless technologies.

The appeal was filed in the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit on January 31, 2020 by the Law Office of Edward B. Myers on behalf of Environmental Health Trust, Consumers for Safe Cell Phones, and several individuals. Myers was part of the recent winning litigation against the FCC (along with the Natural Resources Defense Council and 19 tribal groups) which overturned FCC regulations that would have exempted small cell facilities from environmental review and compliance under the National Environmental Policy Act.

The legal action was featured in Law and Crime’s article  “Scientists Sue FCC for Dismissing Studies Linking Cell Phone Radiation to Cancer” where attorney Edward B. Myers stated, “The FCC’s order terminated an inquiry into the adequacy of existing health and safety standards for radiofrequency radiation from wireless devices and facilities, including cell phones and cell phone towers and transmitters,” he said. “The existing regulations were promulgated in 1996 based on scientific data from 1992 and the FCC had commenced the inquiry in 2013 after the General Accounting Office (GAO) issued a report finding that the existing standards may be based on outdated science and may need to be updated.”….

Press Ombudsman Upholds Professor Tom Butler’s Complaint on Irish Times Article on 5G

Source Article : Irish Times

The Press Ombudsman has upheld a complaint by Professor Tom Butler that The Irish Times breached Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) of the Code of Practice of the Press Council of Ireland.

On 5 September 2019 The Irish Times published online an article challenging concerns that there might be health risks associated with 5G technology. A sub-heading to the article stated that the blossoming anxiety over professed health risks of 5G “can be traced to a single scientist and a single chart”.

Professor Butler made a formal complaint to the Office of the Press Ombudsman claiming that Principle 1 (Truth and Accuracy) and Principle 2 (Distinguishing Fact and Comment) of the Code of Practice had been breached. Professor Butler challenged what he understood to be the subtext of the article which was, he said, that there were “no real links between wireless technology and health”. In particular, he disputed the accuracy of the sub-heading to the article, claiming that there was “significant scientific concern that dates back to the 1950s, at the very least”. He referenced many scientific papers and research findings which questioned the safety of microwave radiation, stating that “there is a significant body of scientific evidence on hazardous non-thermal levels of microwave radiation”. He questioned the statement of the author of the article that “mainstream scientists continue to see no evidence of harm from cell phone radio waves” which he described as “demonstrably false”.

The Irish Times responded by saying the article had been published in good faith and that its author had “twice won the Pulitzer prize and is a long-established science writer with the New York Times”. The Irish Times said that the article had been supplied by the syndication service of The New York Times and that it had been written by a “highly respected writer and commentator” who was expressing his opinions in the article. The editor stated that The Irish Times “does not have an opinion on whether there are links between wireless technology and health”. What was published, he said, was the author’s opinions on this subject. An offer of the publication of a letter that “would need to be not longer than 500-600 words” which would provide an opportunity to challenge the original article was made.

Professor Butler declined the offer of a letter of the length suggested as the “subject matter was not conducive to expression in a mere 500 words”.

As the complaint could not be resolved by conciliation it was forwarded to the Press Ombudsman for a decision.

It is not the function of the Press Ombudsman to evaluate the conflicting claims of the effects of wireless technology. The Press Ombudsman’s task is to decide if the Code of Practice of the Press Council has been breached. Principle 1 requires the press to strive at all times for truth and accuracy. In the article the author made assertions about the effects of wireless technology which Professor Butler claimed were inaccurate. His complaint, which included substantial supporting documentation and international research, contained sufficiently persuasive evidence to allow a decision that the article did not meet requirements in regard to Principle 1. It is a frequently repeated truism that everyone is entitled to his own opinion but not his own facts. An opinion piece in a newspaper has the same obligation to facts as any other part of a newspaper. I am upholding this complaint on the basis that the article, in not taking more account of scientific research that raised concerns about the impact on human health of radio waves, breached the accuracy requirements found in Principle 1.

In this instance The Irish Times offered Professor Butler an opportunity to publish a 500-600 word letter. In my opinion given the complex arguments on the effects of wireless technology this was not a sufficient response to resolve the complaint.

Other parts of the complaint were not upheld. The full decision can be accessed at https://pressombudsman.ie

HEALTH EFFECTS OF 5G IN REAL LIFE CONDITIONS: NEWLY PUBLISHED PAPER

Download Full Report Adverse health effects of 5G mobile networking technology under real-life conditions

“Adverse Health Effects of 5G Mobile Networking Technology Under Real  Life Conditions”  published in Toxicology letters identifies the wide-spectrum of adverse health effects of non-ionizing non-visible radiation and concludes that 5 G mobile networking technology will affect not only the skin and eyes, but will have adverse systemic effects as well.

Authors

  • Ronald N. Kostoff, Research Affiliate, School of Public Policy, Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia, United States
  • Paul Heroux, Toxicology and Health Effects of Electromagnetism, McGill University, Canada
  • Michael Aschner,  Molecular Pharmacology, Einstein Center of Toxicology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, United States
  • Aristides Tsatsakis,  Laboratory of Toxicology, Medical School, University of Crete, Voutes, 71409 Heraklion, Crete, Greece and Department of Analytical, Toxicology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy, Sechenov University, 119991 Moscow, Russia

The authors state that 5G will increase the cell tower densities by an order of magnitude. Radiation could penetrate much deeper into a small animal in comparison to a human,  because of the much smaller animal size. The researchers point out that most laboratory experiments were not designed to identify the more severe adverse effects reflective of real-life conditions. For example, they do not include the real-life pulsing and modulation of the carrier signal and do not reflect the real life exposures of various modulations. In addition, the vast majority of experiments do not account for synergistic adverse effects of other toxic stimuli with wireless radiation despite the reality that people are exposed to a myriad of toxic insults every day.

The review explains how science has documented additive, synergistic, potentiative, and/or antagonistic effects created by the combination of exposures. Combined exposure to a toxic stimuli and wireless translates into much lower levels of tolerance for each toxic stimulus and the exposure limits for wireless radiation when examined in combination with other potentially toxic stimuli would be far lower for safety purposes than those derived from wireless radiation exposures in isolation.

The authors contend that almost all of the wireless radiation laboratory experiments that have been performed to date are flawed/limited with respect to showing the full adverse impact of the wireless radiation that would be expected under real-life conditions because they did not include signal information and only used single stressors.

The researchers conclude that in aggregate, for the high frequency (radiofrequency-RF) part of the spectrum, currently published reviews show that RF radiation below the FCC guidelines can result in: carcinogenicity (brain tumors/glioma, breast cancer, acoustic neuromas, leukemia, parotid gland tumors), genotoxicity (DNA damage, DNA repair inhibition, chromatin structure), mutagenicity, teratogenicity,  neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s Disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), neurobehavioral problems, autism, reproductive problems, pregnancy outcomes, excessive reactive oxygen species/oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis, blood-brain barrier disruption, pineal gland/melatonin production, sleep disturbance, headache, irritability, fatigue, concentration difficulties, depression, dizziness, tinnitus, burning and flushed skin, digestive disturbance, tremor, cardiac irregularities, adverse impacts on the neural, circulatory, immune, endocrine, and skeletal systems” and “from this perspective, RF is a highly pervasive cause of disease”
